How a Faulty WC Float Valve Triggered a High Water Usage Alert in Bournemouth
When Bournemouth Water notifies tenants about unusual water usage, it usually means one thing a hidden leak is wasting water somewhere in the property.
At Southern Leak Geeks, we were called out to Draycott Road, Ensbury Park on 6th July 2026 to investigate exactly that.
This case turned out to be a perfect example of how a small internal plumbing fault can create big problems, especially when it goes unnoticed.
Step 1:
Tracer Gas Leak Detection Upon arrival, we followed our standard diagnostic process however we couldn't locate a stopcock within the flat so had to use a different method: “Isolated the water meter on arrival and injected tracer gas into the water mains pipework. ”Tracer gas is one of the most accurate non-invasive leak detection methods. It allows us to track escaping gas through pipework and fixtures - pinpointing leaks with precision. Within minutes, our analyser picked up gas escaping from the WC cistern. The Culprit: A Cracked Bottom-Entry Float Valve On closer inspection, we found the issue:“ the bottom entry float valve towards the base had a crack which was letting water by. ”This small crack meant water was continuously passing through the valve and out the built in overflow, even when the toilet wasn’t being used. Because the water meter was still registering movement, it triggered the alert from Bournemouth Water. Once we isolated the WC and removed the tracer gas, the meter stopped spinning - confirming the fault.
Repair
Float Valve ReplacementThe float valve was in poor condition and had failed completely. We replaced it with a new, reliable unit:“Float valve now replaced.”This instantly resolved the issue and stopped the unnecessary water usage.
Full Property Check
We don’t stop at the first fix - every leak investigation includes a full property inspection. “We checked every other water outlet at the property... from all the tests we ran there are no other issues. ”The only challenge was the inaccessible stopcock, likely located in a hallway cupboard filled with tenant belongings. We’ll revisit this on our next visit to ensure full access and proper isolation capability.
